I’ve been thinking about what makes a team a team and how that’s different from a group. To me, a group is a set of people. A team is that group that is now tied by a common goal. For example, a group of doctors is a group of doctors. When this group has a patient in common and these doctors are trying to save this patient’s live, they become a team. To me, a team has to have a common goal that all team members are trying to reach. I think this also applies in the corporate environment.
But, just because multiple people are responsible for the outcome, that should not absolve them from their individual responsibilities. I have often observed when teams are involved, personal accountability goes out the window. Teams allow people annonymity to some degree and that in turn allows for shirking of responsibilities.
Is it just me who noticed that? What is your experience with teams and groups?

There is a place and time for both, but not at the expense of the individual. I heard a quote recently that was something like this “I’d rather have 5 employees who meet expectations that 1 who exceeds and 4 that need improvement” (on a rating scale of Exceeds expectations/Meets expectations/Needs Improvement).
